We're always talking about the huge migration occurring on Kiawah Island this time of year; with birds moving in and out of the island, it is a beautiful sign that fall has arrived! But why is it so hard to actually see these birds actually migrate? Why does it seem like they just appear and disappear out of thin air?
The answer is relatively simple: they travel at night. If you go outside and listen closely, you can potentially hear dozens - if not hundreds - of birds calling out to one another. They continuously call out to ensure they stick together in the safety of the darkness so they do not get lost.
The most interesting part is that each bird begins their migration alone. While you may think that all birds time their journey together, instead, each bird individually decides when it is ready to fly. This makes their flight calls all the more important; because they begin traveling on their own, calling out – and hearing the calls of other birds – lets them know they have safely found a flock to travel with.
